We’re interviewing Hector from the YouTube channel Grilled Nails today here on Nailpolis! As you can see Hector uses tons of bright neon shades in his designs, and we love his colorful nail art to bits! You can keep up with his nail art on his blog, and his Nailpolis gallery as well!
1. When did you first start wearing nail polish?
I remember being in middle school and wearing clear coat, my parents weren’t to happy with that. I liked the shine and it was fun to make my nails look healthy. Around senior year of high school I started buying colored nail polish. I think my first polish was Sally Hansen Mellow Yellow. After I graduated high school I delved into the world of nail art.
2. What colors of polish do you like to wear?
My favorites would have to be pastel neons and anything holographic. I own a massive amount of blue polish though!
3. Do you think you’ll ever stop wearing nail polish?
No, I don’t see myself ever not wearing polish. I generally only paint my left hand, and I’ll wear polish out in public sometimes too. I think I will always be obsessed with nail art and creating different designs.
I have learned to tell people that it is not wrong to wear polish; it does not change my character and should not be something to judge people by.
4. Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to wear polish but hasn’t worked up the nerve to do so publicly?
I would say start small, a nice base coat, or maybe a nude. It’s often told that male polish wearers only wear gunmetal hues or anything that is dark in color, but slowly wear what you want to from brights, to primary colors, to glitters! 5. What kind of reactions do you get to your nail art?
I am always surprised by the compliments from people. Some of my family are traditional and don’t like the nail polish, and always discourage it, yet strangers and friends always see my nail art and say “Oh, I like your nails!” and have something nice to say. Then they ask if I want to start a salon or that they’d like me to do their’s.
6. How would you describe your style?
My style is all over the place. I love the neutrals, the purples, the glitters, the vampy colors, the glitters, and more. I like to say that I design nail art for whatever I’m feeling that day, I might paint some leaves, or some ice cream cones. Anything goes!

7. How do you take care of your nails?
My nails are insanely fussy. I push back my cuticles in the shower and also use a cuticle remover. I never cut my cuticles, because I know that is not that great for nail health. I lotion my hands and nails every day, if I remember. I file my nails often, and cut them if absolutely necessary. Thankfully, my nails grow relatively fast and strong, so I only have to take care of my skin.
8. Did you ever feel awkward or hesitant because of what people would think when you first started wearing polish?
Yes! I always think people are going to say that it’s wrong or gross. But I have learned to defend my craft. People will tell me no, nail polish is for girls. I don’t believe in that gender stereotype, I believe in loving what you do and making it a point to try and avoid the negative.
9. Have you ever tried doing someone else’s nails?
I’ve done a few people’s nails, and it’s always different because everyone has different nail shapes. What may work on my nails, as far as application goes, may not work on another’s. I always want to do other peoples nails and try some new nail art.
I love Jazz and contemporary dance and am slowly learning as I’m taking a Jazz class in college currently.
10. What are some other things you’re passionate about?
I am a full time student, and I also work par t-time, but on my down time I love dancing, YouTube, and makeup. YouTube is also another passion for me, but I have to find the right time to make videos. My channel is geared toward makeup and nail polish for all ages.
