We’re interviewing Kim today, but you might know her by her Instagram handle, kimiko7878! Kim’s elegant and gorgeous nails pop up in our top 100 most loved designs time and time again, and now you can get a glimpse into how she does it!
1. Tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Kim, I’m from Edmonton, Alberta Canada, I am a thirty something mother of two boys, five ferrets, one husband and a dog (yes, I include husband under the category of what I mother, I adore him but often wonder how he made it on his own before we met).
2. What are some of your favorite types of nail art to create?
My favorite type of nail art to create are freehand florals. I think the reason I like them so much is that you don’t need to make them perfect, sometimes the less perfect they are the more realistic they look.
3. What kind of photo setup do you have, and where do you like to take your pictures?
For my photo’s I use a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX220V, I take most of my photo’s in my home office (also known as my cougar den). I have a DIY light box , it’s just a cardboard box with the top and sides cut out of it and I use tissue paper to diffuse the light.
4. What’s your favorite type of polish to work with?
My favorite kind of nail polish to work with are Creme’s. Holographic’s make me go weak in the knees but I find the art that I do goes better with more of a simple background.
5. How often do you change what’s on your nails?
I get asked this question a lot! I change what is on my nails almost daily! When I first started getting into nail art I would wear something for a week or so but the more I got into it the faster I would change my manicures. I also find it to be very therapeutic! After hectic days with kids and work and everything else that comes with being a grown up, in the evening sitting down and concentrating on something and being creative is a great outlet!
6. What are some of your other passions?
Well, we have the aforementioned Ferrets, I am pretty passionate about them! I started out with the first one and fell so head over heals in love with him, that within that first year I had five! They are trouble making thieves and I adore them!!
7. If you could only have one nail art tool, what would it be?
If I could have only one nail art tool it would have to be my liner brush! I think it’s the most versatile item I have in my arsenal, with practice you can do filigree, branches, leaves, petals, animal print and more!
8. Do you see yourself every not continuing to create nail art?
I certainly don’t see myself not doing nail art anytime soon. I recently became a certified nail technician because I am so passionate about nails and nail art. Like I said before, it’s my therapy, I need it!
9. Have you ever come across a technique you just couldn’t get to work?
It is my personal belief that you have to be a graduate from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to be able to water marble! I have watched the tutorials, I have read the tips, I have tried all temperatures of water, I have tried different nail polishes, my husband has actually forbidden me from attempting it anymore because he doesn’t want to deal with the fallout from it! It pains me to say this because I never give up on anything, but I can not water marble!
10. When did you first start wearing nail polish?
I think I was about twenty six when I first started to wear nail polish on a regular basis, I would have spurts when I would wear it all the time and then kind of forget about it. It was around 2009 when things started to get serious, I had bought Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri ‘Wined Up’ and was floored by the beauty of it and how fast it dried, I was hooked!
