Cheeseburger in paradise

Today we’re interviewing the amazing Emiline from Nail Polish Society! Emiline believes “that every woman is entitled to define her beauty how she sees fit. It is her prerogative to wear red lipstick with her hair in rollers, diamond earrings to complement her gardening gloves, or gorgeous nail polish while in her sweatpants watching Star Trek episodes or reading a Jen Lancaster memoir.” You can read more about her adventures in nail art on her blog, and her Nailpolis gallery as well!

Tell us some things about yourself!

Well, let’s see.. I’m married to my wonderfully supportive hubby and we have two adorably energetic kiddos. I studied American Sign Language interpreting in college and ended up working in cosmetics. I come from a large family, eight girls total! None of us were girly girls growing up. I was a late bloomer when it came to beauty products. But I think working in cosmetics and running a nail polish blog have helped me make up for lost time. Two other hobbies I’m passionate about are reading and pen palling. Both have really suffered this past year from all the time I spend on my blog. It’s a constant tug-of-war of what I want to do the most.

Phantom of the opera

What first got you into nail art?
Nail art was something I just stumbled upon. I mean, I knew it existed, but the only nail art I had seen before seemed so cheesy and I could never see myself wearing it. Then thanks to some aimless wandering on the interwebs, I found awesome nail art techniques such as water marbling, stamping, etc. There are some techniques that I like better than others. Right now I’m having fun trying anything and everything. I like to play and do outrageous designs that I typically wouldn’t wear, but get a kick out of anyway. I constantly strive to develop new skills so that I can inspire myself, and hopefully others as well.

How many bottles of nail polish do you have?
That number steadily grows more often than I’d like to admit. Before starting my blog last year, I thought I was a little eccentric, owning an entire OPI traincase full of polishes (ha!). Not too soon after I began blogging, my bedroom was overflowing with bottles. My discovery of indie polishes is partly to blame. The count is now 450+ and growing. I also hoard tools, accessories, and stamping plates.

If you could have any polish in the world off your wishlist, what would it be?
My wishlist multiplies every day, but there is one that I would REALLY love to have. Ever since the Rouge Louboutin polish was released I’ve pictured owning it. Not to use it really, but to be placed upon a shrine as an idol of sorts. It’s such a beautiful work of art!

What’s your favorite design that you’ve created?
Oh, that’s really tough to make me choose! I have too many favorites! I will say that my Banksy mani has a special place in my heart. I did that only weeks after starting my blog. I didn’t expect starting a blog to be such an emotional roller coaster, but it was. When I did that mani I was so proud of myself. It helped me feel like, yeah, I can really do this!

How do you take care of your nails?
I naturally have very thin, weak nails so I have to be very careful. Keeping an application of nail polish on actually helps protect them from damage. The best thing I’ve done so far is assigning my husband dish duty. Now I only wash dishes if it’s necessary. I’ve seen a huge improvement!

What’s your favorite color family of nail polish?Neutrals for sure! Browns, nudes, and grays are truly alluring to me! It’s funny though how I’ve come to appreciate all color families thanks to the endless array of beautiful choices available. Who knew I’d ever wear yellow nail polish?

If you break a nail to the quick, do you chop them all short, or try to ignore the one?
Chop them all off! It would be impossible for me to ignore the nub. I can’t stand to have them skiwampus.

What’s the longest you think nails can be before they start seeming scary?
My nail beds are really long already, so I don’t let them grow very much past the tips. It really just depends on the hands and shape for me that determines when it starts getting into the scary zone.

What’s the most expensive polish you’ve ever bought?
Deborah Lippmann La Vie en Rose, it’s the only Deborah Lippmann I own so far. It’s not loud or flashy, but very soft and feminine. Something about it just spoke to me. I typically try to be savvy with my purchases, but I’m willing to dish out a little more for something special.
